| Of the Day But when you leave the job, hopefully things get Better; but it still felt as if everything was against me. Well I went to a local sandwich shop and donut place, Because I needed something to cheer me up, and the Indian girl who works there, is so pretty and Kind and bored and I wanted to entertain her, but I was blurry and dazed and ravaged by my day, But I felt bad for her, because she came all the way From India to this little city in the Midwest, and she Misses her mother and family very much. But I still made an effort to entertain her, even though My eyes were narrowed and I felt as if I would collapse At any moment, because she would smile silently as she Makes my sandwich or bagel, and I always feel better When she smiles, so I feel as if I owe her for this And the customers rarely speak to her, thus she feels lonely. So I talk to her and find out things about her: she loves her Mother very much, and hopes she can move to America with Her someday, she also has a sister, who lives in London, She speaks English very well, probably better than myself, And studied it in college while she was in India, she’s married And her husband saved up a lot of money to bring her over To the States, and she’s wearing a lovely sweater, which was bought in London, when is visited by her sister. And she’s lit up like a candle while she tells me these things And I can tell that she has a garrulous nature, and had been Waiting to tell someone these things, and I am glad she told Them to me and forget my sorrow this day. She’s very happy and smiling now, as she hands me my bagel And sandwich, and she infects me, because I feel happy And smiling And I leave glad, not quite expecting This sudden turn of the day. |
