What if Emily Dickinson’s Drawer Remained Always Shut?
Is it possible that there are undiscovered masters of art?
That somehow just disappeared? Names never placed on the chart.
This is not easy to establish, but let’s give it a try!
And when we’re finished perhaps they’ll be a hit in the bull's eye.
What if nobody found Emily Dickinson’s poems in the drawer?
Everyone knows the world would certainly be more poor.
And would Confederacy of Dunces even be here?
If after Toole’s suicide, his mother just gave up, never to
persevere?
So much of the pantheon is factored by luck and force of will,
With so many possessing neither, the politics are all uphill.
And it doesn’t always, eventually, just fall their way
Unlike van Gogh, wrongs go on forever, nothing left to say.
So if there’s a heaven, will these lost treasures be displayed for all
to see?
Or, is the universe like Hedda Gabler, a devouring black hole never
meant to be?
